  • 750g ground beef
  • 1.2kg potatoes, peeled, cubed
  • 500ml beef stock
  • 165ml warm milk
  • 55g tomato paste
  • 125ml red wine (or substitute)
  • 20g grated parmesan
  • 1.5 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 carrot, finely chopped
  • 1 celery stalk, finely chopped
  • 40g all-purpose flour
  • 1 bouillon cube
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried thyme or 3 sprigs fresh
  • 2 bay leaves
  • Salt + pepper to taste
  • 30g butter for mash
  • 30g butter for topping

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet; sauté minced garlic and finely chopped onion, carrot, and celery until soft.
  2. Add ground beef; cook until browned.
  3. Stir in flour and cook for one minute; mix in tomato paste, red wine (or substitute), beef stock, bouillon cube, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, bay leaves; simmer for 30 minutes.
  4. Boil cubed potatoes until soft; drain and mash with warm milk and butter.
  5. Let meat filling cool slightly; spoon into baking dish and top with mashed potatoes. Sprinkle parmesan cheese on top.
  6. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F); bake for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.
