Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 68 Tbsp milk
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 pinch salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans by lining them with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until blended.
  3. Add the milk, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until smooth.
  4. Carefully stir in the boiling water until fully combined; the batter will be thin.
  5. Pour the batter evenly into prepared pans and bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  6. Allow cakes to cool for 10 minutes in pans before transferring them to cooling racks.
  7. For frosting, beat together softened butter, cocoa powder, powdered sugar, vanilla, and a pinch of salt.
  8. Gradually add enough milk to achieve a spreadable consistency.
  9. Once cooled, place one layer on a serving tray, spread about a cup of frosting on top, then place the second layer on top and frost both sides and top as desired.
